MP Supports More Rights for Students

a new Government plan for the future success of higher education

David Taylor, MP for North West Leicestershire, has welcomed a new Government plan for the future success of higher education, setting out the important role universities will play in securing the country’s economic recovery and long term prosperity which has been unveiled this week.

It calls for fairer access, more information about courses, likely future earnings, teaching quality and closer links with business.

David said "Students need more information about their courses. At the end of the day studying is a big commitment and will have a huge effect on the rest of their lives. So they deserve to know what exactly the courses will do for their job prospects and earnings.

"A lot of people said that widening opportunity would harm the excellence of our Universities. The last decade has proved them wrong. And I believe we need to get even more people into higher education.

"Students are not just school leavers. The UK has just under six million workers with qualifications equivalent to A levels but with no experience of higher education. To get, at all ages, more people studying we need make courses more tailored to peoples needs. I want to see more part-time study, vocationally-based foundation degrees, work-based study and more studying whilst living at home

"Business and industry contribute a lot to our higher education and their involvement is a big plus. They need be involved even more so that courses are suitable for the world of work.
